Review - The Silver Mask by Cassandra Clare and Holly Black

1/20/2018

Plot:
A generation ago, Constantine Madden came close to achieving what no magician had ever achieved: the ability to bring back the dead. He didn't succeed . . . but he did find a way to keep himself alive, inside a young child named Callum Hunt.

Now Call is one of the most feared and reviled students in the history of the Magisterium, thought to be responsible for a devastating death and an ever-present threat of war. As a result, Call has been imprisoned and interrogated. Everyone wants to know what Constantine was up to—and how he lives on.

But Call has no idea.

It is only when he's broken out of prison that the full potential of Constantine's plan is suddenly in his hands . . . and he must decide what to do with his power.

In this spellbinding fourth book of Magisterium, bestselling authors Holly Black and Cassandra Clare take us beyond the realm of the living and into the dangers of the dead.

Thoughts:
Why does it seem like this series is getting shorter and shorter every year that it's released?

Call in prison? I can't believe it! He is just a kid! Seriously?! For months, no visitors, no one to talk to, and he hasn't seen his father! Why is he being treated like some Dark Overlord? He is not! Not yet...

On the same day that Jasper visit Call in the Panopticon, Tamara busts him out with the aid of her devoured sister and Anastasia. But what they didn't know was that Anastasia planned the break out with Master Joseph and Alex.

First of all, is Jasper going to be Aaron's replacement? Bad idea. Jasper's funny and all but he does not complete the circle with Call and Tamara.

Being held against their will, they try to plot escape plans but were unsuccessful. Master Joseph told them that they can do whatever on the condition that they raise Aaron from the the dead. Not chaos-ridden.

In between practising to raise Aaron from the dead, reading Jericho Madden's diary and hatching up an escape plan, Call fully realizes his true feelings for Tamara. Odd timing, but the heart wants what it wants, I guess. But there's also the whole business of Call being insecure with the fact that Tamara liked Aaron, not him. But they kissed and so that left him so confused and frustrated. (Don't you just love how YA writers put the most mundane of worries amidst or on the cusp of a world ending?)

From reading the diary, Call discovers how he can raise Aaron - by using a part of his soul. Something that Constantine Madden didn't do, that's why he was unsuccessful. Ans Call does revive Aaron but he doesn't act the same. Tamara was not such a fan of this. She made Call promise to let Aaron go once he acts differently or when he's not the Aaron they know anymore. The next day, Jasper and Tamara escaped and made it to the Magisterium.

In anger, Call kills Master Joseph, unknowingly giving Alex the authority to lord over everyone, like a true dark overlord motherfcker that he is. He threatens to kill Call and Aaron if they do not do as he say, so Call does but devised his own plan - by commanding his chaos-ridden army to dance. I swear that happened! Call and Alex get into a definitve fight, trapping Alex in the void and draining Call off his life. Aaron sacrifices by giving back Call's soul. Call lives but, without a soul Aaron dies - again! Meanwhile in the void, Alex becomes chaos-devoured, his face melding with the silver mask, vowing revenge.

Whhhhhhhyyyy? Why would they kill off Aaron again and again? and break our hearts again and again?! But we all know, it has to be so but it's still hard to accept though. Aaron deserved more. What was the point of his death really? The effect of it was that Call know knew ow to raise the dead, but he can't probably do that again anymore since he only has part of a soul? I don't know. It's just be too sad if the reason they killed him off was so that Call and Tamara could end up together. I didn't even like that direction in the story. I mean why does that always have to happen? Why can't they just all be friends in the end? Marry them off to other people. Introduce a new character. Ugh.

Anyway, I was rather taken by this book and I can not wait for the next one. Is it the last one? Oh no! Alex, that lil prick, I want to see his revenge.

"But for all his evil, Constantine had been right about one thing. Death wasn't fair. Aaron shouldn't have died..."
