Book Thoughts - Playlist for the Dead by Michelle Falkoff
8/30/2018Plot:
Thoughts:
I am definitely gonna make a playlist in my spotify of the songs in the book - I know I wouldn't be the first one. After this book, would you be able to listen to the songs the same way? I wonder about that. That kind of happened to me with Lord Huron's "The Night We Met" which was used in Netflix's "Thirteen Reasons Why."
As the story progresses I somehow wished that Hayden didn't die. I wanted read about him because he really seemed like a good guy. Sam and Hayden have this awesome friendship between them and I really want to read how the two of them are as friends. An active interaction, not just memories.
(As of writing, cahpter 17) Astrid is really shady. So there's a mystery behind all these. Some bullies get beat up by someone. My first guess, probably Eric? Or that Astrid has something to do with it.
Turns out it was really Astrid. And things were getting good between her and Sam too. Unfortunately I don't think that it had such a meaningful or impactful ending. I loved everything in the middle though.
Rating:
Part mystery, part love story, and part coming-of-age tale in the vein of Thirteen Reasons Why, The Perks of Being a Wallflower, and The Spectacular Now, Michelle Falkoff's debut is an honest and gut-wrenching novel about loss, rage, what if feels like to outgrow a friendship that's always defined you—and the struggle to redefine yourself.
There was a party. There was a fight. The next morning, Sam's best friend, Hayden, was dead. And all he left Sam was a playlist of songs and a suicide note: For Sam—listen and you'll understand.
To figure out what happened, Sam has to rely on the playlist and his own memory. But the more he listens, the more he realizes that his memory isn't as reliable as he thought. And it might only be by taking out his earbuds and opening his eyes to the people around him that he'll finally be able to piece together his best friend's story. And maybe have a chance to change his own.
