Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun (My Little Monster) by Robico
8/25/2015Summary:
My Little Monster focuses on the relationship between Shizuku Mizutani, who has absolutely no interests except in studying and her plans for the future, and a boy named Haru Yoshida, who sits next to Shizuku in class but rarely attends school. After Shizuku is tasked with delivering class printouts to Haru's home, she meets Haru, who immediately greets her as a friend, starting their new relationship. Nicknamed "dry ice," Shizuku is renowned as a girl who is emotionless and cold. However, when she met Haru, she was touched by his innocence and his lack of knowledge towards human relationships. Though known as a violent and uncontrollable monster, Haru is actually kind and gentle. Haru immediately declares his love towards Shizuku, but it takes much longer for Shizuku to realize and accept her own feelings towards Haru. Together, they help each other, two previously unsocial beings, learn how to care for others and make friends. x
I give this manga a 10. I definitely love everything about it.
Haru is absolutely cute, and what appeals more is his innocence towards most of the things, especially relationship amongst other people. But when you really think about it, his character's need was really very simple - a friend. He's probably the weirdest character I have ever read. Besides the fact that he's exceptionally smart, Haru is a daredevil. He jumps of buildings or enter through windows stories up! If there ever will be a live action movie, this would be what I'll look forward to.
The same way as Haru, I got enamored with Mizutani's character. Call it fate or whatever, when these two friendless people meet, you just have to ship them so bad. Darn, she's cold. I don't think I've ever encountered a character like her as well and I get astounded with her brutal honesty as the other characters. When Mizutani started liking Haru, maaan that was the sweetest thing ever! But I can't help but sympathize with her, since the feeling was so alien to her, she was distracted and so confused. What would you expect from Haru being the way that he was in the first volumes?!
Haru is soooo dang clingy. Cute-clingy, though, not the annoying kind. I like that Mizutani doesn't have this super exaggerated negative reaction when Haru hugs her, kiss her or touch her. Besides the fact that she's the type to be calm and collected, I like that her character was not so much prudish or too conservative. And she's not malicious. Yamaken (Yamaguchi Kenji) can't keep his hands off her as well, but she doesn't think too much about it. I love that it's not such a big issue (except for Haru).
The first stages of Haru and Mizutani's relationship was so hard to keep up with! Are they or aren't they? Why are you doing this to me?! Just hook up already! Then Yamaken comes along and disturbs my emotions further.
It doesn't escape Haru's attention, with his innocence and all, that Yamaken is developing feelings towards simpleton Mizutani. Even I didn't believe it since this Yamaken dude is so proud! He only admits his feelings a few volumes later and confessed towards the end! He might have done the right thing though, since he was totally rejected and friend-zoned, which was expected. So you still have to give him credit and respect in doing so. And because of this, I began to love Yamaken-kun. Hahaha! You know me, I always root for these type of characters, because who else will?
Yamaken, who I thought was very insignificant and such a nuisance in the beginning started to catch my attention in those precious little moments he and Mizutani spend together. He becomes a different person when he's with her. It shows how much he is so much more than just a rich brat. He definitely understands Mizutani, more than Haru ever will; and I guess more than Mizutani herself. Plus, he looks so cute sitting at home thinking about this girl, wanting to talk and see her so badly, even coming up with lame excuses.. oh wait, that's kinda sad, because their conversation always ends with Haru as topic and though they're together he always gets ignored. I really don't like the fact that he didn't get his own happy ending. There should be a spin-off about Yamaken! His character is too good to end up just like that!
There are so much more I'd love to talk about regarding this manga but I think this will do for now. There will be a part two, I swear!
