Review - Eliza and Her Monsters by Francesca Zappia
11/21/2017Plot:
Eighteen-year-old Eliza Mirk is the anonymous creator of Monstrous Sea, a wildly popular webcomic, but when a new boy at school tempts her to live a life offline, everything she's worked for begins to crumble.
Scott Westerfeld's Afterworlds meets Nimona in this novel about art, fandom, and finding the courage to be yourself. Features illustrations by the author throughout. Perfect for readers of Rainbow Rowell's Fangirl, this is the second novel by the acclaimed author of Made You Up.
In the real world, Eliza Mirk is shy, weird, smart, and friendless. Online, Eliza is LadyConstellation, the anonymous creator of a popular webcomic called Monstrous Sea. With millions of followers and fans throughout the world, Eliza's persona is popular. Eliza can't imagine enjoying the real world as much as she loves her digital community. Then Wallace Warland transfers to her school, and Eliza begins to wonder if a life offline might be worthwhile. But when Eliza's secret is accidentally shared with the world, everything she's built—her story, her relationship with Wallace, and even her sanity—begins to fall apart.
Thoughts:
I am so inlove with this book! Yes, it definitely reminded me of Rainbow Rowell's Fangirl but it's also different at the same time. I want to have Eliza's skills! My dream is to be like her but, yeah, skillz bruh!
Eliza is a regular teenage girl, except she has super famous alter ego, LadyConstellation. She creates original webcomics that comes out weekly and has a huge following. Thumbs up for not being fame whore and knowing boundaries between online life and real life. But maybe it was also because of her anxiety.
There's so much details shared to the readers about how life of internet famous people goes on. I've always been curious how they earn money by doing their thing. How tedious artist's schedule are just to release a few pages of art. I love that Eliza can take care of herself, financially, but the fact that she hid that from her parents are a bit off for me. Like why though? She doesn't want to talk about it, maybe?
Here comes the new boy, Wallace. A big fan of Eliza's Monstrous Sea, also internet famous for being the biggest Monstrous Sea fan fiction writer. He doesn't talk so much... because a perfect story line would have to have two anxious lead characters. You know, so they can be cute and angsty together. I must say, I'm getting a little weary about this one. I hope I can read something with one character being a ball of sunshine and the other the angsty dark storm.
They eat lunch together, they hang out, and like each other, what do you think would happen? Yeah, the plot gets a little too predictable at this point. Wallace doesn't know that Eliza is LadyConstellation and Eliza has no real intention at first to tell him so, but sort of changed her mind as she was already feeling guilty for lying. Her parents did a good job of revealing that though. I didn't see that coming! I was angry for her. Ugh clueless parents are clueless.
They scared me at the last part and it became literally breath taking, in a not so good way. My feelings just went to Eliza. She just want a quiet life but all these things happening to her is spinning out of control and Wallace is angry and sad and Eliza's just sad... Damn the last part was heavy.
It was no fairy tale ending but it ended good, it didn't feel anti-climactic. Eliza came out of the rabbit hole.
